Pinch valve solutions play a vital role in battery recycling as electric vehicle demand continues to grow. One of its main challenges is managing “black mass,” the abrasive powder generated when used batteries are mechanically processed and then converted into a highly abrasive and corrosive slurry.

This guide explains how a pinch valve’s full-bore design and durable elastomer sleeve offer an efficient solution for controlling high-solid content slurries in battery recycling systems.

The Rise of EV Battery Recycling

Electric vehicle (EV) adoption is driving a massive increase in end-of-life battery disposal, making an essential need for efficient battery recycling infrastructure to manage spent cells. Recovering valuable materials from these batteries is important for building a sustainable supply chain for new energy production.

Recyclers face significant pressure to extract metals like nickel, cobalt, and lithium at high purity levels. Failing to process these results in lost economic value and increased environmental waste. Hence, facilities must optimize every step of the recovery process to remain competitive and compliant with regulations.

Scaling operations need robust equipment capable of handling large volumes of incoming battery scrap. Plants are investing heavily in automated systems to manage the transition from raw waste to valuable raw materials. Modern recycling lines must prioritize throughput and reduce downtime to meet global demand.

What is Black Mass

Black mass is the by-product of batteries for recycling, and an active powder containing a mixture of cathode and anode materials. It contains recoverable metal oxides and is made up of many metals like copper, manganese, cadmium, lithium, cobalt, etc. Moreover, it is highly conductive and has abrasive characteristics that pose risks to standard industrial equipment.

Battery recycling recovers valuable secondary raw materials that can be reused in production, supporting a closed-loop circular economy. The objective is to separate each metal from this mass and remove toxins from the material to prevent contaminating the metals. The purer the metal, the better it can be recycled.

Black mass is commonly stored in bulk bags (super sacks). Safe and efficient big bag unloading systems are vital to transfer the powder into storage hoppers or processing equipment while minimizing dust and handling risks.

Two Techniques:

  • Pyrometallurgy (or Thermal Industry): This technique is ideal for the majority of batteries and accumulators.
  • Hydrometallurgy: Saline, alkaline, zinc-air, and lithium batteries are involved in this process, making it possible to upgrade zinc and manganese.

Valve Requirements for Abrasive Black Mass

For slurry applications, a pinch valve handles media that is both abrasive and corrosive, like black mass. Traditional metal-seated valves, unfortunately, often fail here as grit enters internal cavities, which results in jams, seal damage, and even expensive plant shutdowns.

A pinch valve for battery black mass ensures that the black mass slurry cannot settle or clog within the valve body. It should provide a full-bore opening that guarantees an unobstructed flow path for thick slurries. This allows operators to maintain a constant flow without fear of blockage or irregular accumulation.

As the slurry only contacts the internal rubber sleeve, the mechanical housing of the valve remains protected from the abrasive media. High-grade elastomer sleeves, like Viton or EPDM, are engineered to absorb the kinetic energy of particles. This resilience significantly extends the service life of the pinch valve compared to that of traditional metal-seated solutions.

Here are the advantages of using a pinch valve for battery black mass and other abrasive applications is essential:

  • Zero Clogging: There are no “nooks and crannies” for the black mass to settle and harden in, and rather, it is an unrestricted flow path.
  • Lower Costs: It is much more cost-effective to replace a rubber sleeve annually than to replace a whole stainless steel valve every three (3) months.
  • Overall Safety: Reduces the risk of a failing valve body and leaking toxic materials by isolating the corrosive and abrasive slurry inside a single reinforced tube.

Sustainable Solutions

Sustainable recycling relies on minimizing maintenance intervals and the frequency of component replacement. A valve that fails because of abrasion contributes to unnecessary resource consumption and high operational costs. Choosing the right pinch valve ensures plants run longer between service cycles.

Efficient flow control also enhances the overall recovery rate of valuable metals from the slurry. Precise regulation of process media guarantees constant leaching times and higher purity of the final metal output. This precision minimizes the chemical reagent usage, further improving the environmental profile of the recycling facility.

Lianke’s sustainable solutions are reflected in the production of durable, corrosion-resistant pinch valves that extend equipment lifespan and minimize leakage, waste, and unplanned downtime. We follow international standards (API, DIN, JIS, GB) and ISO9001 quality management, supporting long-term operational and resource efficiency across various sectors.
