Valve installation looks simple on paper—until you’re on-site, the flanges don’t line up, and the process fluid is waiting. In reality, poor installation is one of the leading causes of premature valve failure, leakage, and costly downtime. Whether you’re working with a válvula revestida, a colador, or a válvula de pinza, the same fundamental rules apply. This guide walks through the most frequent mistakes and how to avoid them.

1. Misalignment and Over-Torquing

One of the most common issues is forcing a valve into a pipeline that doesn’t align naturally. This puts stress on the valve body and can crack the lining—especially critical for a válvula revestida. A lined valve is designed to resist aggressive chemicals, but the PTFE or PFA lining is vulnerable to mechanical damage. Always support the pipe on both sides and never use the valve bolts to pull flanges together.

Over-torquing flange bolts is another silent killer. It compresses gaskets unevenly and can distort the valve seat. Use a calibrated torque wrench and follow the manufacturer’s tightening sequence, usually a star pattern.

2. Ignoring Flow Direction

Many valves are directional. A válvula de pinza is often bidirectional, but some designs perform better with flow in a specific direction to extend sleeve life. Similarly, a colador must be installed with the flow entering the designated inlet—otherwise, debris won’t be captured properly, and the screen or basket may collapse.

Always check the arrow on the valve body. If there’s no arrow, consult the manual. Installing a strainer backward is a common mistake that leads to clogged downstream equipment and unnecessary pressure drop.

3. Poor Support and Vibration

Valves are not pipe supports. A heavy válvula revestida or a large válvula de pinza hanging unsupported will eventually develop leaks at the flange joints. Vibration from pumps or compressors accelerates fatigue. Install pipe hangers or brackets within one pipe diameter of the valve on both sides.

For a colador, vibration can cause the basket or screen to loosen, allowing bypass of unfiltered fluid. Use a mounting bracket if the strainer is inline and heavy.

4. Incorrect Gasket Selection

Using the wrong gasket material is a recipe for leaks. For a válvula revestida, the gasket must be compatible with both the lining and the process fluid. Spiral-wound gaskets with PTFE filler are common, but full-face gaskets are preferred for fragile linings to distribute bolt load evenly.

For a válvula de pinza, the sleeve is the sealing element—no gasket is needed at the flange, but the flange faces must be clean and flat. For a colador, check that the housing gasket matches the O-ring or flat gasket specified; otherwise, bypass leakage occurs.

5. Neglecting Commissioning and Maintenance Access

A valve installed in a location that’s impossible to reach for maintenance is a future headache. Leave enough space to remove the actuator, replace the válvula de pinza sleeve, or change the colador screen or basket. For a válvula revestida, ensure the handle or actuator can be operated without obstruction.

During commissioning, open and close each valve several times to verify smooth operation. For a colador, record the initial pressure drop. For a válvula de pinza, check that the sleeve is not pinched or twisted.

6. Forgetting Thermal Expansion

Pipelines expand and contract with temperature changes. If a válvula revestida is rigidly anchored between two fixed points, the thermal stress can crack the lining. Use expansion joints or loops. A válvula de pinza with an elastomeric sleeve is more forgiving, but it still needs room to move.

Reflexiones finales

Most valve installation problems come down to three things: alignment, support, and following the manual. Whether you’re installing a válvula revestida for corrosive service, a colador to protect downstream equipment, or a válvula de pinza for abrasive slurries, taking the time to do it right saves money and downtime.
